
Key Parameters of Stand-Up Pouches
The performance of a stand-up pouch depends on several technical parameters that must be controlled during material selection, printing, lamination, forming, and sealing. Consistent control of these parameters is essential for package integrity, product protection, and reliable production.
Pouch Dimensions
Key dimensional parameters include pouch width, height, bottom gusset depth, side gusset dimensions, and opening size. Dimensional tolerances should be established according to the filling equipment and customer requirements.
Consistent dimensions ensure that the pouch can stand properly and run smoothly through automated filling and packaging lines.
Film Thickness
Film thickness directly affects mechanical strength, stiffness, barrier performance, and overall package weight. Different layers may be adjusted according to the application. Excessive thickness can increase material consumption, while insufficient thickness may reduce puncture resistance and package durability.
Barrier Properties
Barrier performance should be selected according to the sensitivity of the packaged product. Important parameters include Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) and Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR).
Products such as coffee, tea, snacks, powders, and dried foods may require enhanced oxygen and moisture protection. Light-sensitive products may also require high-opacity or aluminum-based barrier layers.
Seal Strength
Heat-seal performance is a critical parameter for flexible packaging. Important factors include seal strength, seal width, sealing temperature, pressure, and dwell time.
The sealing window should provide sufficient strength without causing film deformation, burning, or seal-through. Seal testing should be performed according to the applicable product specification.
Mechanical Performance
Pouches should provide adequate tensile strength, puncture resistance, tear resistance, and drop resistance. These properties are particularly important during transportation, stacking, and consumer handling.
Functional Performance
For zipper or spout pouches, additional parameters include zipper opening and closing force, spout dimensions, cap fit, leakage resistance, and reclosability. The finished pouch should maintain stable standing performance after filling.
Quality Consistency
Production should maintain consistent material thickness, dimensions, color, sealing performance, and barrier properties throughout each batch. Appropriate inspection and testing help identify process deviations before defective products reach customers.
