
Common Defects of Three-Side Seal & Vacuum Bags
Three-side seal vacuum bags must maintain reliable sealing, mechanical strength, and barrier performance under negative pressure. Defects can occur during film production, printing, lamination, bag making, vacuuming, or filling. Early detection and systematic troubleshooting are essential for maintaining package integrity.
Seal Leakage
Seal leakage is one of the most critical defects. Common causes include insufficient sealing temperature, inadequate pressure or dwell time, contaminated sealing areas, wrinkles, and incompatible sealant layers.
The sealing parameters should be optimized according to the actual film structure. Seal-strength and leak testing should be performed regularly, especially at corners and areas with multiple film layers.
Weak or Inconsistent Seals
Weak seals may result from unstable temperature control, uneven sealing pressure, incorrect jaw alignment, or variations in film thickness. Consistent seal width and uniform heat distribution are essential for reliable vacuum performance.
Excessive sealing temperature can also damage the sealant layer and reduce overall package quality.
Vacuum Loss
If a bag loses vacuum after packaging, possible causes include micro-leaks, pinholes, poor seals, punctures, or insufficient vacuuming conditions.
The complete package should be inspected rather than focusing only on the visible seal. Leak testing and vacuum-retention testing can help identify the source.
Punctures and Film Damage
Sharp product edges, excessive handling, or insufficient film strength can cause punctures. During vacuuming, the film conforms tightly around the product, increasing mechanical stress.
Selecting an appropriate laminate with adequate puncture, tear, and flex resistance can reduce the risk of damage.
Wrinkles and Folding Defects
Wrinkles may occur because of uneven film tension, poor alignment, incorrect vacuum positioning, or excessive sealing pressure. Wrinkles around the sealing area can create channels that compromise package integrity.
Film alignment and bag positioning should be controlled throughout production.
Delamination
Laminated bags may experience layer separation caused by poor adhesive bonding, incorrect adhesive ratios, insufficient curing, contamination, or excessive processing stress.
Lamination quality should be checked before the material enters the bag-making process.
Dimensional Variation
Inconsistent width, length, or seal position can affect filling efficiency and vacuum equipment compatibility. Stable cutting, film feeding, and sealing processes are required to maintain dimensional accuracy.
Quality Control and Prevention
A systematic troubleshooting process should identify the defect, determine the root cause, adjust the relevant parameter, and verify the correction through testing. Regular monitoring of seal strength, leakage, vacuum retention, appearance, and dimensions can significantly reduce recurring defects.
