
QC Testing Standards for Finished Flat Bottom Side Gusset Bags
Quality control testing is essential for verifying the integrity, dimensional accuracy, sealing performance, and functional reliability of finished flat-bottom side gusset bags. Testing requirements should be established according to the material structure, product characteristics, filling process, and customer specifications.
Dimensional Inspection
Finished bags should be checked for width, height, side gusset depth, bottom dimensions, seal width, and component position where applicable. Measurements should remain within approved tolerances.
Visual inspection should also identify wrinkles, scratches, contamination, delamination, printing defects, distorted corners, and uneven gussets.
Seal Strength Testing
The bottom and side gusset seals must withstand the load generated by the filled product. Seal strength testing should be performed according to ASTM F88/F88M or an applicable internal specification.
Samples should be taken from representative production batches, with particular attention to the bottom corners and multi-layer gusset areas.
Leak Testing
Leak testing can identify incomplete seals, pinholes, channels, and weak gusset or bottom sealing areas. ASTM F2096 provides a method for detecting gross leaks through internal pressurization, while ASTM D3078 uses bubble emission for flexible packaging.
Testing methods should be selected according to the bag structure and product application.
Barrier Performance
For products requiring protection against oxygen or moisture, the packaging structure should be evaluated for Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) and Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR).
Common test references include ASTM D3985 for oxygen transmission and ASTM F1249 or ISO 15106 for water vapor transmission. Temperature and humidity conditions should be documented because they can affect test results.
Mechanical Performance
Finished bags should have adequate puncture resistance, tensile strength, tear resistance, and drop performance for the intended application. Heavy or sharp products may require additional mechanical testing.
Filled-bag compression and transportation simulation can also help evaluate the durability of the flat bottom and side gussets.
Functional Inspection
The filled bag should stand evenly on a flat surface without excessive tilting or deformation. For bags with zippers, valves, or other components, verify opening, closing, attachment strength, and leakage resistance.
Final Quality Control
Before shipment, verify appearance, dimensions, sealing quality, product cleanliness, quantity, labeling, and carton condition. Nonconforming bags should be isolated and investigated according to established quality procedures.
A combination of routine inspection, laboratory testing, and production-batch monitoring provides more reliable control of finished bag quality.
