
Filling-Process Considerations for Flat-Bottom Side Gusset Bags
The filling process has a direct impact on the shape, stability, sealing quality, and overall performance of flat-bottom side gusset bags. Proper coordination between bag design, filling equipment, product characteristics, and sealing parameters is essential for efficient and consistent packaging.
Bag Opening and Positioning
Before filling, the bag must open correctly and maintain a stable position on the filling machine. Accurate bag dimensions and consistent gusset folding help ensure reliable opening and reduce misalignment.
The flat bottom should be properly formed before product loading so that the bag remains stable during filling.
Product Characteristics
Product properties strongly influence filling performance. Powders, granules, liquids, and irregular products have different flow behaviors and filling requirements.
For powders and fine particles, dust control and prevention of product contamination in the sealing area are particularly important. Granular products should be controlled to prevent excessive impact or sharp edges from damaging the film.
Filling Weight and Accuracy
Filling equipment should be calibrated to maintain consistent target weight. Accurate dosing reduces product variation and prevents excessive mechanical stress on the pouch.
Overfilling may distort the gusset and increase stress on the bottom and side seals, while underfilling can result in poor appearance and reduced shelf presentation.
Gusset and Bottom Formation
During filling, the product should distribute evenly throughout the pouch. Uneven product distribution can cause the bag to tilt, deform, or develop excessive stress at specific sealing areas.
Equipment should allow sufficient space for the side gussets and flat bottom to expand naturally without forcing the film into an irregular shape.
Sealing Area Protection
The sealing area should remain clean during filling. Product trapped between sealing layers can significantly reduce seal strength and create leakage channels.
For powder, liquid, or oily products, appropriate filling control and cleaning mechanisms should be implemented to maintain clean and continuous sealing surfaces.
Machine Compatibility
Filling speed, bag dimensions, gusset depth, opening size, and sealing position must be compatible with the packaging equipment. Proper machine setup helps prevent bag slipping, folding errors, incomplete opening, and seal misalignment.
Production trials should be performed using the final bag structure and actual product.
Quality Verification
Filled bags should be checked for weight accuracy, standing stability, dimensional consistency, seal integrity, leakage resistance, and overall appearance. Drop and transportation testing may also be required for demanding applications.
Process Optimization
An effective filling process balances speed, accuracy, product protection, and package integrity. Regular monitoring of equipment settings and production samples can help identify process deviations before they result in large-scale defects.
