
Snack Food Packaging: Films and Formats That Keep the Crunch
The crunch is the product. People buy crisps, puffs and nuts for texture as much as taste, and that texture lives or dies in the packaging. Snack film keeps moisture and oxygen away from the food until someone tears the pack open. Get it wrong and a good recipe comes out soft.
What Turns a Crisp Snack Soft
Moisture is enemy number one. Baked and fried snacks come off the line nearly dry and grab water from humid air; two or three percent of moisture turns a crisp chip leathery, and nothing brings the crunch back. Oxygen attacks the oils in nuts and fried snacks, creating the cardboard-like flavour that makes shoppers think the stock is old. Light is quieter, but it bleaches colour in clear packs. A film worth its name holds all three at bay; moisture simply does the damage fastest.
The Film Has to Earn Its Place on the Cost Sheet
Snacks are high-volume, low-margin goods, and film has to respect that arithmetic. No packer wraps a thirty-day biscuit the way they would a nine-month export line of nuts. The discipline is buying exactly the barrier the shelf life demands, and no more. A short-life baked snack needs a modest structure; a nut product heading overseas needs serious moisture resistance. Every film conversation starts with one question: how long must the product stay good? That answer sets the budget, and the budget sets the film.
Film Structures That Keep the Crunch
The workhorse is OPP laminated to PE: oriented polypropylene printed and bonded to a polyethylene sealant. It prints and seals at speed and holds moisture out for the weeks a biscuit spends between factory and shelf. Where the product must last longer, metallised film takes over, an ultra-thin aluminium layer that blocks moisture and light far better, hence metallised OPP and PET/metallised for longer-life crisps. Full foil laminates, the strongest barrier of all, are reserved for premium and export lines with the margin to pay for them. For a crisp product the number that matters most is the water-vapour transmission rate: grams of moisture per square metre of film each day. Low WVTR is the whole game when crunch is the selling point.
Pillow Bags, Made at Form-Fill-Seal Speed
Most snack bags are pillow bags made on form-fill-seal machines. Printed roll film feeds off the reel, forms into a tube around a collar, and is filled as product drops from above; sealing jaws close the top of one bag and the bottom of the next in one motion. Modern lines run dozens of packs a minute, and the film takes a beating, tracking straight, sealing through product dust and oil mist, never giving the machine a reason to stop. Converting quality shows here: film printed, laminated and slit in one factory has consistent gauge and dependable sealant, keeping line speeds up and waste down.
Nitrogen Flushing Extends the Life of Nuts and Fried Snacks
Sealing the bag does half the job for oily products, because the air trapped inside is the problem. Nitrogen flushing fixes it: just before sealing, inert nitrogen pushes oxygen out of the bag and leaves an atmosphere the oils cannot react with. Residual oxygen under two percent is common on nut and fried-snack lines; well-run lines hold lower still. The film matters too: nitrogen only protects while it stays in the bag, so the structure must hold it and keep its seals.
Bag-in-Box Formats for Multipacks and Sharing Sizes
Not every snack pack is a single pillow bag. Multipacks, sharing bags and food-service sizes often use the bag-in-box format: a printed film pouch holds the product inside an outer carton. The film does the barrier work; the box adds transit protection and carries the brand graphics. The pouch keeps moisture and oxygen out, and the carton stops it being punctured on the way to the consumer.
Resealable Zippers Suit Snacks That Are Opened Again and Again
Resealable closures have moved from premium extra to expected feature on bigger packs. Big packs get opened many times over several days, and every opening lets humid air in. A press-to-close zipper, fitted during converting, lets the consumer squeeze the air out and lock the bag shut between servings; the last handful stays as crisp as the first. It adds a little to the cost of each bag and real value for the household, which is why more ranges are built around it.
Buying Snack Film From a Factory That Does It All
Buying from a trader is not the same as buying from a manufacturer that prints, laminates and slits under one roof.
